Journalism Matters: A vital accountability ally in the battle for stronger NCD policies and healthier communities

As world leaders prepare to adopt a new UN declaration on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) with key measures stripped out, join a conversation on how independent reporting exposes and challenges corporate and political interference, and how public health advocates and journalists can better collaborate to inform the public and policymakers about drivers of NCDs – and ultimately spark positive change.

Hosted by The Examination, an independent newsroom investigating the drivers of health crises worldwide, including speakers from the NCD Alliance, a global civil society network, Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism, South Africa’s pioneering nonprofit health newsroom, and a community organizer who waged a fight against a local polluting factory, this discussion will highlight the essential role of reporting in the battle against the world’s leading causes of death.

You’ll hear real-life examples of how journalists have exposed hidden causes and costs of illness, elevated community voices, shifted public narratives, and contributed to policy action. The event aims to be the start of an ongoing dialogue on cross-sector collaboration that can amplify our collective impact, ultimately helping to improve and save lives.
