Optimised and coherent fiscal policies

India has reduced subsidies across the oil and gas sector by 85% over the past decade, including through the phased removal of petrol and diesel subsidies between 2010 and 2014. These reforms were complemented by incremental increases in fuel taxes, which boosted government revenues. By reducing costly subsidies and increasing revenues, India created greater fiscal space to redirect public resources towards other national priorities.

Investment in/prioritisation of data and surveillance

India is one of the few countries completing all five WHO-supported population surveys on NCD risk factors and related behaviours. These include the WHO STEPwise approach to NCD risk factor surveillance (STEPS), the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) and the Global School Health Policies and Practices Survey (G-SHPPS). This comprehensive evidence base of essential data is crucial for data-driven policy making.
