Lower NCD medicine and device costs

PAHO’s Strategic Fund uses pooled procurement to secure lower prices for essential NCD medicines across the Americas. In 2020, PAHO consolidated regional demand for antihypertensive medicines from six participating countries, enabling a competitive international tender and long-term supply agreements for quality-assured generics. A subsequent comparison found that countries purchasing five antihypertensive medicines outside the Strategic Fund paid between 20% and 99% more than the Fund’s prices, demonstrating the potential of pooled procurement to improve affordability.
